New Photos

May 3rd, 2010 , admin

I’ve added two new photos to the Horse Racing gallery from the 2010 Kentucky Derby.  The first shows jockey Calvin Borel winning the Churchill Downs Handicap, and the second shows Calvin holding up the victory sign after his third win in the last four Kentucky Derbys.  What a great day and what a blessing it is to be there.  I’ve also added a photo in the Life’s Rich Pageant gallery from a recent shoot for Education Week.

Grapplers

April 3rd, 2010 , admin

I showed prints from the “Grapplers” series to the Louisville Photographer’s Forum at Paul Paletti’s gallery on Thursday night.  I was really pleased with the response to the portraits from the photographers at the gathering.  In the meantime, I held another photo session at Ohio Valley Wrestling.   I’m really pleased with the new portraits I’ve produced there, and would like to thank OVW owner Danny Davis for trust and support of this project.  I’ll be posting some of the new portraits soon.

My World My Family

March 19th, 2010 , admin

A photo of mine from the Riverside Gardens story is being shown as part of an exhibit entitled “My World My Family.”  The print is part of a show of photographers’ work from Perm, Russia and Louisville, in celebration of the “Year of the Family,” in the Russian Federation.  My photo depicts a Riverside Gardens resident spending a few last moments with his deceased mother.  The exhibit will be on display starting April 2 at 714 East Market, in Louisville.

Freedom Hall’s Last Game

March 13th, 2010 , admin

What an electric event.  After fifty four years, the last regularly scheduled basketball game in legendary Freedom Hall, for the University of Louisville men’s team.  The game had multiple sub plots, including being the final regular season game.  UL’s opponent, Syracuse, was the number one team in the country.  After an up-and-down year UL had to win the game to make the NCAA tournament.  It was senior day, and members of UL’s national championship teams from 1980 and 1986 were on hand for this last game.  The pressure was on UL, to come away from all this with a loss would have would have ruined the incredible spirit of the day.

It was great to be in such a pressure packed environment, with so much on the line, and documenting the event.  Take a look at the Sports gallery on patmcdonogh.com for photos of seniors Jerry Smith and Edgar Sosa celebrating their win from atop the shoulders of their fans after the game.  There is also a photo from the catwalk, one hundred feet above the floor,  looking straight down on the basket.

New Website

February 23rd, 2010 , admin

Welcome to my new website. It’s been a few years since I’ve put together a completely new site. The experience has been one of both frustration and reward. Thanks to Jonathan Palmer for his technical skill, and his willingness to drop everything and help out.

The site is a culmination of my current work as a photographer. Since I’ve put down the camera for a job as a photo editor, I now have a much greater appreciation and desire for photography than I did for many of my last years of daily shooting.  The act of photography is once again exhilarating for me.  Through this process of elimination I’ve learned that I most enjoy shooting sports, documentary photo stories, portrait series and the occasional fashion shoot.   I also keep a keen eye out for life’s bizarre moments, as seen in the “Life’s Rich Pageant” photo gallery, and love to stretch my wings on a great commercial assignment..   And like many photojournalists these days I’ve turned to photographing a few weddings each year with my friend Matt Stone. You can check out our wedding work at: liaisonweddingphotography.com

While I’m not enthusiastic about writing about myself, watch for updates to this blog and to my photo galleries.
